Our next play reading will be Saturday, August 7th, at 4:30 PM. It's free, and everyone is invited. We'll be serving a light dinner. We'll be reading "In the Dream Castle", by Drew Katzman. Book your room now for a fun evening.
The canyon river is just about done. We actually fired it up for a test run and found a half-dozen leaks that we're now in the process of repairing. We're also going to do a bit of tweaking on the river itself to fine tune the water flow. But the pump worked like a champ and everything was really quite beautiful. Another week and it should be up and running.
Morgan and Nolan, and Michael and Keri celebrated honeymoons with us. Rachel, John, Jesse, Lesslie, and Alyssa stayed with us while attending a wedding. David and Stacy, and Don and Barb celebrated anniversaries; and Derek and Gina celebrated Derek receiving his MBA. Marsha and Christie celebrated a birthday. Dave and Lauri visited from Pasadena, and Bill and Ginny visited from Brawley.

Marianne used her hand too much after her surgery, and then to top it off, took a fall and landed right on it. The doctor said that it set her back to where she was right after the operation. I've kidnapped her with me to Sacramento so that she won't have anything to do but sit around and rest.
Marianne's brother Harold succumbed to cancer and a close friend of ours, Suzanne Penyak, also died of cancer this month.
Liz and Daniel just got back from a week long cruise around Alaska. But now he's back to Germany and she's back hard at work. Regina is going to summer school. William's back working in Sacramento and studying to take the PMP exam.

To remove discoloration from bruises, apply a cloth wrung out in very hot water, and renew frequently until the pain ceases. Or apply raw beefsteak.

Recipes from "The Everyday Cook-Book," (c) 1889 and found in the Jamul Haven Angel House.
To Choose Pork: If the rind of pork is tough and thick, and cannot easily be impressed with the finger, it is old. If fresh, the flesh will look cool and smooth; when moist or clammy it is stale. The knuckle is the first to become tainted.
Pork is often what is called measly, and is then almost poisonous; measly pork may easily be detected, the fat being full of small kernels. Swill or still-fed pork is not fit for curing; either dairy or corn-fed is good.
Fresh pork is in season from October to April.
In cutting up a large hog, it is first cut in two down the back and belly. The chine or back bone should be cut out from each side the whole length, and is either boiled or roasted. The chine is considered the prime part. The sides of the hog are made into bacon, and the inside or ribs is cut with very little meat.
