News From Jamul Haven
Our Halloween murder mystery party was a
smashing success. Everyone had a ball getting into their characters and
trying to guess "who done it." Marianne and Glenda did a fabulous job,
cooking three prime ribs (well done, medium, and rare) and all of the
fixings for a scrumptious dinner.
During two weeks of the month we were pleased to host a resident
composer from the Czech Republic as he worked on finishing the musical
Eliot. We also hosted three nationally famous comedians who were in town
for a show.
November 1st we'll be shutting down the top spa for the winter.
That allows us to redirect all of the solar panels to the lower spa and
pool, which keeps them comfortable throughout the winter.
We will be hosting free Thanksgiving Dinner for any members of the
military who will be in San Diego during Thanksgiving. If you know of
anyone who would be interested, have them contact us.

Amy Lowell Slept Here
(continued)
Last month we learned a bit about the
poet Amy Lowell and read some of her diary entries about staying across the
way from the Dabney's Fayal Ranch. This month I'll continue to quote from
a letter from Mrs. Raymond Emerson written in April 1971 from Concord
Massachusetts.
"There were a pleasant group of neighbors within driving distance of
the Fayal Ranch-among them a house across the street with an orange orchard
to the south and below that, a large olive grove.
Mr. Dabney died about the year 1893 and eventually the ranch
was carried on by his wife and daughter who with the aid of the very
capable Portugese forman developed it into the most thriving ranch in the
whole region. Water came from a shallow well and there was a tank just
east of the house. There were about 12 horses including one light driving
horse and two saddle ponies.
I spent the winters of 1901 and 1902 with Mrs. Dabney and her
daugheter, Alice who ran the ranch. Miss Dabney was a rare person,
practical, capable and gentle, beloved by all who knew her.
The ranch had just come into full bearing at that time. The
vineyard was plowed by a six horse team. The ground under the olive trees
was all plowed, as was that between the orange trees, which were carefully
pruned. There was a little house beside the olive grove with long wooden
pickling vats where the olives were soaked. The main crop was the grape
crop. I was not there when the grapes were picked, but I think they were
dryed in the sun and shipped as raisens.
To be continued.

Romantic Getaway #9: The
Spa
Pamper your mate completely with a full
spa treatment and then some. Begin with a massage. Then, perhaps a hot
bath and wash their hair. Take an extended amount of time brushing their
hair afterwards. Perhaps a foot bath or pedicure. Use your
imagination.

Innkeeper
Update
William's musical Eliot was a
huge success up in Los Angeles. His play Pound will be performed for one
night only on Broadway in New York this January 26th. His book THE GIANT
BOOK OF POETRY won the National Best Book award for best audio fiction.
Marianne and Glenda had a ball in Las Vegas. But they keep talking
about how much fun the spa was, and the wonderful pool with the cabana and
"cabana boy," but we haven't heard much about how much they won! <g>
Will and Liz will be driving cross country together from
Jacksonville up to Whidbey Island, Washington as Liz reports to her next
duty station.
Regina will be dancing as the Ice Princess at Viejas again this
year. It's a wonderful show for the whole family, and it's free. There
are more than one Ice Princess to cover all of the nights, so check with us
if you want to be sure to go on a night when she'll be dancing.
