Recipes from Yesterday
Recipes from “The Everyday Cook-Book,” (c) 1889 and found in the Jamul Haven Angel House.

Plain white family bread: Take one pint of flour and half a pint of good hop yeast, and stir it together about 5 o’clock in the afternoon; at nine put one-half gallon of flour in a tray, put the sponge in the middle of the flour with a piece of lard as large as a walnut. Knead it all up with tepid water made salt with two teaspoonfuls or more to taste; work it well, and put it in a jar to rise. Next morning knead it over with a little flour; make in two loaves, and set it in a warm place or oven until ready; then put it to bake, and when done, wrap it in a nice coarse towel. If you have no sugar in the yeast you use, stir a large teaspoonful in it before putting it in the flour.

Sunlit Rooms: Perfect health is nearly as much dependent on pure sunlight as it is on pure air. Sunlight should never be excluded except when so bright as to be uncomfortable to the eyes. And walks should be in bright sunlight, so that the eyes are protected by veil or parasol when inconveniently intense. A sun-bath is of more importance in preserving a healthful condition of the body than is generally understood. A sun-bath costs nothing. Remember that pure water, fresh air and sunlit homes kept free from dampness will secure you from many heavy bills of the doctors and give you health and vigor. It is a well established fact that people who live much in the sun are usually stronger and more healthy than those whose occupations deprive them of sunlight. And certainly there is nothing strange in the result, since the same law applies with nearly equal force to every animate thing in nature.

We still have availability over Father’s Day and for our annual BBQ and firework’s extravaganza on July 3rd. If you’re looking to book multiple rooms for a group, keep in mind that the Asian and Art Deco Rooms will show as unavailable unless we specifically open them up. We’re only making those rooms available if we have a full house or a group booking.

News from Jamul Haven
We’re continuing to build the staircase up the hillside, which is our current big project. Many of the younger fruit trees have started to produce fruit. We encourage guests to sample any ripe fruit they find directly from the trees while they are walking around the gardens. Many of the fruit trees came from our taking a branch from an existing fruit tree and simply sticking it in the ground, where it eventually grew and created a new tree.

Innkeeper Update

We decided to go on a 6 mile hike, with mixed results. Cynthia and Charlotte made it skipping most of the way. William dragged along hot, tired, and sore. Riley barely made it and wouldn’t move the next day because of sore mussles, refusing even to go on his morning run with William. Marianne made it to the half point, found a Rubios, and settled into a booth with a couple of tacos and a soda to wait for us to come back with the car.
If you’ve got a lot of DVD movies around, VUDU has a good deal going on now. You download a small app to your computer, which allows you to insert your DVDs one by one; detects the DVD title to verify ownership; then lets you convert the DVD to an UltraViolet cloud based copy. This avoids problems with lost or damaged DVDs, and lets you play your movies on any device. Best of all, you can upgrade to BluRay definition in the process. If you do them in batches of 10 or more, the cost is $1 per BluRay disk conversion, or $2.50 per standard disk conversion including the upgrade to BluRay.

History Update

Jamul Haven History, Here Comes the Stage

The Greenleaf family operated several stage coach lines in San Diego County, including one that made regular trips into Jamul through Jamacha and Mexican Canyon (the canyon where Jamul Haven is located). In 1900 they acquired the rights to have their stage stop at Jamul Haven during the weekly run into Jamul. Jamul Haven was an ideal location, with access to water in the stream across the street. In addition, it was just far enough where the horses would be tired out from the run out from El Cajon. So a circular driveway was installed (highly unusual for those days) around the house and facilities were set up to water and change horses at Jamul Haven prior to the long uphill climb into Jamul proper. A small office was outfitted for use by the stage operator. During the renovation of Jamul Haven the exterior door was removed, and interior door was added, and that office is now the bathroom in the Celtic room.
