Mustard Sauce: Stir three tablespoonfuls of mixed mustard and a speck of Cayenne into a butter sauce. This is nice for deviled turkey and broiled smoked herrings.

Children Love Games: Take advantage of this to give them physical training. Furnish them the apparatus for games which require a good deal of muscular exercise. Those curious little affairs which require them to sit on the floor or gather about the table and remain in a cramped position, are not advisable. It is particularly desirable that the games should call them into the open air and sunshine. In this way children lay in a stock of health and strength. Remember that, particularly in our early years, this is infinitely more important than all adornments of the person or study of books.

Will’s doing some contract work for a company called Matterport, which makes a special camera that takes 3-D photos of spaces. While he was visiting during the holidays he used to camera to make a 3-D model of Jamul Haven. There are three ways to view the images, walking around like you are in the rooms; dollhouse as shown above; or floorplan. If you’d like to enter the 3-D virtual world of Jamul Haven, click on the link below. It’s kind of fun.

News from Jamul Haven
We finished the Art Deco room and it’s ready for guest use. But for a variety of reasons, we’ve decided to use it as an overflow room that is only available when the other four rooms are fully booked, or when there is a group rental that needs all five rooms. The room features an art deco motif including an art deco tile shower, original art work, and a very large screen, high definition television with surround sound. Unlike the other four rooms, this room is in the main house, but with a private entrance.

Innkeeper Update
Regina and Travis had their baby! Juliet was born at 3:45 AM on 1/7. She weighed 6 pounds, 4 ounces and both mother and baby are doing fine. When Regina first got pregnant, Marianne told her, “You’re going to have this baby on January 7th,” and gave her a maternity blouse she bought that had a label that said January 7th. It looks like she was right!

We had lots of family visit at various times over the holidays. My 85 year old mother visited from Florida and had many lifetime firsts, including her first time flying alone and her first yoga class. I also talked her into going on the carousel down at Balboa Park with me and the kids. Will visited (as I mentioned above), and Elizabeth, Daniel, and the two grandkids Reyna and Brynn visited from Germany. Our two year old grand-daughter Reyna came over here deathly afraid of all dogs, but Riley quickly won her heart and now she walks around asking where he is and says, “I love you Riley.” Unfortunately, Elizabeth and Daniel also confirmed that they have decided to stay in Germany after she gets out of the Navy, and they just bought a house over there.  Marianne had an MRI to find out what’s going on with her sciatica, and they confirmed that two of her disks are “messed up,” and pressing on the nerve. She asked about surgery, but they thought the best course of action was to wait with the expectation that it would eventually clear itself up. Of course if that process follows my similar experience several years ago, “clearing itself up” takes place over a few years, not weeks.

History Update
(Reprinted from a 1913 book scanned by a neighbor, Jack Doherty, and provided to us.)

In 1886 was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Gifford and Miss Rachel Whelock, and they have become parents of two sons and a daughter, of whom one son, Dewitt, is associated with his father in business. The children in order of birth are: Dewitt, Ruth, and Orville, all of whom are at home. Mr. Gifford is well known in San Diego and throughout California as one of the representative shippers of the coast. He has been a director of the Chamber of Commerce for the past ten years. He is a man of virile character, thoroughly mastering whatever he undertakes, and with the passing of the years he has achieved the success which only comes through persistent and honorable effort.
